The first 'Dambusters' Charity Ride took place in 2012 when Victor Chevens and Simon Dufton rode to and from the Mohne Dam following the route of Lancaster AJ-J which was flown by Sqdn Ldr David Maltby DSO on the Dams Raid, May 16/17 1943.
It was also when the association between the real 'Dambusters' 617 Sqdn and the charity ride team was started. In 2012 not only did the ride take place but 617 sqdn was also on deployment to Afghanistan and flew two help for Heroes Teddies on active service which were then auctioned to raise even more cash for Help for Heroes! Total raised for Help for Heroes ..... £8,000
Then in 2013 things got bigger and better! Craig Carey-Clinch joined the organising team and the support from the Royal Air Force increased to include RAF Scampton, RAF Lossiemouth and the battle of Britain Memorial Flight as well as the continuing relationship between 617 sqdn and the 'dambusters' Charity Ride team. We also added Motorcycle Outreach to our charities with an 20:80 split between them and Help for Heroes.
We were very privileged to be a part of the official 70th Anniversary Commemoration of the Dams Raid with more than 30 UK riders leaving RAF Scampton on 14th May riding all the way to the Mohne Dam to be greated and welcomed by 40 - 50 local German bikers for a joint ride out around the Mohnesee lake. Then at midnight, just as the bombers would have been diving to attack the wall back in 1943 wreaths were laid on the waters by the Dambusters Team and the local Mayor to commemorate all the lives lost. If you were there you will remember... it was EPIC! £13,500 raised ...
So here we are in 2014 ..... and we're off again! This time we will be riding to be part of the 70th Anniversary commemoration of Operation market Garden, the Bridge Too Far! We are once again closely linked with the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain memorial Flight and the RAF Scampton Heritage Centre and again will be raising cash for Motorcycle Outreach. However, this year our primary charity will be the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund (www.rafbf.org) with 80% of everything we raise going straight to them!
Fancy being part of one of this years iconic rides? fancy doing a bit of good at the same time? Then read on and then register to ride with us!
